Nopinz PRO-1 Jersey and Base Layer

Chuck Peña PEZ sez: Nopinz is probably a brand unfamiliar to North American PEZ readers. It’s certainly a brand that was previously unknown to me. That’s because it’s a UK-based brand in the town of Barnstable in the district of Devon — but they do worldwide shipping. The genesis of the brand was the Speed Pocket — Blake Pond’s idea of enclosing a race number in a transparent pocket for less drag instead of pinning on a number that can flap in the wind (not to mention putting pinholes in the fabric of expensive jerseys). From there, it became about making all things aero: skinsuits, jerseys, bibs, socks, overshoes, jackets … you name it.

Nopinz PRO-1 Jersey – £89.99

As jersey design/construction goes, the PRO-1 Jersey is fairly “simple” and straightforward:

The PRO-1 Jersey design/construction is readily apparent when turned inside out

Three rear pockets (but no secure zipper pocket) with a reflective stripe

The raw cut sleeves have a narrow silicone strip on the inside for grip

Not only is it tailored for speed, but the “dimpled” material is intended to be more #aero by creating a more turbulent layer that results in a smaller wake and less drag (this is according to my web-based research … I’m not an aerodynamicist)

Fit-wise, a size XS fit me (5’8″, 130 pounds, ectomorph) like a second skin but didn’t feel like it was constricting me. For a jersey that fits more like a skinsuit, it’s surprisingly comfortable.

Full zip … check

Almost a spray-on second skin

Nopinz Base Layer – £24.99

In many ways, a base layer is a base layer is a base layer. Meaning an open mesh material that vents/wicks. In that regard the Nopinz Base Layer is a lot like most base layers from other manufacturers.

But what makes the Nopinz Base Layer different is (a) it’s a black material (most base layers are white) and (b) it has “contre la montre” (French for “against the clock”) emblazoned on the front. Not that anyone will necessarily ever see the latter, but Jacques Anquetil would be proud.

Like the jersey, size XS fit me like a second skin.

The open mesh is more apparent when held up to light

Nopinz PRO-1 Socks – £18.49

As an added bonus, PEZ got a pair of socks that Nopinz calls “everyday aero socks.” Unlike regular knit socks, the Nopinz PRO-1 Socks are knit in the foot part of the sock but the upper part of the sock is what Nopinz calls a “Pista aero fabric.” It’s a thin, semi-stretchy fabric with dimples hence more #aero. Rather than relying completely on compression to hold the socks up, the inside of the top of the cuff has a thin silicone gripper.

I wear a US size 9 shoe which can be Euro size 42 or 43 depending on the manufacturer. Nopinz sizing is size S for Euro 41-42 and size M for Euro 43-44. I decided to go with size S which fit me well.

Do these socks make my feet look faster?

My first ride in the Nopinz PRO-1 Jersey and Base Layer was the Sunday Hilton Head Island group ride in 80-something (F) feels 100+ heat and humidity. Let’s just say that the Nopinz PRO-1 Jersey isn’t designed for such conditions, i.e., dog days of summer weather in the Lowcountry or Babylon on the Potomac. The Nopinz Flow Subzero Road Race Suit that has more ultra breathable, i.e., vented, material would probably be better suited for sweltering heat and humidity. That said, the Nopinz PRO-1 Jersey and Base Layer did about as well as could be expected under the circumstances.

What the Nopinz PRO-1 jersey is designed for is speed and the Hilton Head Island group ride is a flat and fast affair. I can’t say for sure that I was more aero, but any lack of speed on my part was more me and not the fault of the Nopinz kit. As always, I did my best to hang on to wheels until I couldn’t. But at least I looked fast! If your riding is all about eeking out every last watt, then Nopinz may just be the ‘droids you’re looking for.

Maybe not so fast, but hopefully looking good

The Ekoï Ottimo and Carbon 28 Glasses… Now Available!

Ekoï is selling on the website two new pairs of glasses acclaimed by 4 professional teams during the Tour de France 2023.

Ekoï Ottimo glasses: An “excellent” look and vision quality

Different from other glasses of the brand, the Ekoï Ottimo claim a look assumed by the vast choice of colors: 12 resolutely modern shades thanks in particular to the glittery finish encrusted in their branches, but also by the original shape of the lens. Made in the Dalloz workshops, renowned for their know-how, the HD lens offers optimal quality of vision to cyclists in order to avoid potential pitfalls and road roughness during their training or competition.
